My Reply to Soyinka's Video
Most of us have seen the Video of Professor Soyinka blasting the first lady. And maybe, because he is Wole Soyinka and is a Sage in English, we'll see it as a hilarious tape since the first lady isn't exactly William Shakespeare's wife! But let's trash the 'language' and look beyond the expressions and see the intentions. In the Video, Mr Soyinka accused the first lady of misuse of political power or whatever he had in mind. Just look at his facial expression, showed no regard for the first lady at all, coming from a man of his status, disrespecting our first lady publicly like that is disappointing. He is still my mentor. The reasons behind this unprovoked verbal onslaught by Prof. Soyinka are obviously driven by friendship! He said "the Governor of that state is told by a police man, you cannot pass here because the first lady is here". Now because of this, he's on TV insulting our first lady. I put it to Soyinka, what have you said on TV about the conundrum in Rivers state? The bad governance, the insecurities, the brutal beating of elected legislators by that governor's chief security officer and ADC, mere soldiers, mere soldiers beating up an elected official with political power? What have you said on that issue? Or perhaps its because Governor Amechi is your friend you have been hit by a sudden bout of amnesia? The same soldiers that sentenced you to death, pushed you into exile to the united states for years until the death of Abacha! Suddenly you have the guts to talk about things that don't concern you, accusing someone of same thing you are guilty of! Dear Professor, telling the president what to do, for Christ sakes, that issue you were addressing isn't a public issue and doesn't concern him. Its a political issue and the last time I checked soyinka has no political post. We should set our priorities right, talk about things that matter, not going on air to exhibit your adeptness at English.
For the record, I applaud the first lady, if not for anything, but for being herself regardless of her anemic language skills. This lady never relents, regardless of people's opinions, she still goes out there to do what she has to do!. Despite the taunts & mockery all over the interweb & social media, you will see her on TV boldly delivering a new speech, going places, doing things other educated first ladies couldn't do with all their education. If she isn't much of a first lady, who is? Other first ladies' worlds revolved on their looks and their flashy lifestyles, to a point that some perished from it. Then the only first lady I've seen very committed to her duty, y'all now have an opinion just because of preferential friendship and English language which isn't even our mother tongue. Oburo ara na agba unu? We all know Wole Soyinka is a personal friend to Rivers state governor, so let our mind not be clouded with his big english, with the recent occurrence in that state, Soyinka should set his verbal priorities right! Talk about more pressing issues like a soldier and security men beating up an elected official and an educated man using the mace of power as a weapon to fracture a colleague's skull than 'how the first lady is misusing power', if it was a student that tried that, he'll be called a cultist (which by the way same Soyinka started), and will be jailed for years awaiting trial. Abeg make Soyinka go rest, write more books, stories and poems, leave political issues for politicians, an atheist who is a cultist, very funny because every cult has a god, and since you don't believe in God or anything, I wonder how you came up with a god for the cult you started, sounds confusing to me. Just stop insulting our endeavouring first lady. Soyinka once said "the greatest threat to freedom is the absence of criticism", so here I am criticising him! I'm still the young heart attack! Thank you!
