Clarifying The Child Marriage Saga
Clause 4a of section 29 of the 1999 Constitution defines a
full age for any Nigerian who wants to renounce his or her
citizenship to be 18 years and above while clause 4b states
further that in the case of women, aside the 18 years
prescribed in clause 4a, any woman that is married can be
considered to be of full age.
According to this law, since some girls under this age are married already, they are seen as adults. This law has been existing o! In case y'all don't know. Since 1999! Ok! Now, the senate house now wanted to pull off the 2nd part of the law, which states that any married woman is an adult. Now, if the law is pulled off, since marriage is for adults only, marrying anyone underaged will be illegal. You get? Now that is where the shit started! Yerima and his people who already got underaged wives saw this proposed action as a threat to them, therefore the opposition! 33 northern senators and an Edo senator voted against removal of the second part while 60 others voted for the removal. And for it to be removed, the law requires 2-3 majority vote for acceptance, the proposal is now in the house of rep. Hopefully, with all the campaigns, things will turn around
Now explaining this is to clarify that based on the videos of our celebrities who haven't really taken time to dig deep enough before rambling! Nobody rumbled since 1999 o! Its now its being pulled off they are rambling. Well, its cool to be angry, like in my previous post, I stated I haven't had time to go deep due to my birthday party arrangements, but now, its clearer to me what is happening.
