MAKING OF AN ESUT ENGINEERING STUDENT

          History and time with much Evidence has proven that Enugu state University of science and technology is one of the toughest schools to pass through as a student. This school which is situated in Enugu presently have two comprises; Enugu campus, and Agbani campus (which is the main campus). Each year a total sum of more than five thousand students are admitted into its various faculties, but after the designated duration of time allocated to each student to learn during his/ her time as a student is exhausted, less than the original number of student actually graduate at the right time.
In other words, as many already know ESUT isn’t the easiest school to pass through considering the enormous volume of setbacks/ challenges facing the students in the school; Such as off/on shrikes, poor school system management, too many disbursements and many apparent and indiscernible short comings. At the end of the day it’s rather obvious to many that it takes special acumen to get through the school successfully.

          Now engineering faculty; one of the largest faculties in ESUT, wouldn’t be experiencing a different situation from other faculties in the school, although it is situated in the Enugu campus. The Engineering faculty has seven departments. The computer Engineering department, the civil Engineering department, the electrical and electronics Engineering department, the mechanical Engineering department, the Chemical Engineering department, the material and metallurgical Engineering department and finally the Agricultural and Bioresearches Engineering department.

          Getting admitted into the Engineering faculty might be the best thing that happens to a student with the dreams of being a fine Engineer in the society in the neighboring future, anticipatory. Being hoodwinked with the optimistic thinking that things will blissfully roll on hearty and fortunate might lead a student to shuttered illusions, because going through with the five years engineering is where the trouble sets in. Basically noting comes easy in life, but being an Engineering student in ESUT,  you’re prone to facing the toughest times possible for student to face that gets you prepared for what the society presents out there as tough time when you become a certified Engineer. It’s tough, rough, hard and complex. But amazingly some many students liquefy there obstacles and graduate with good grades.

In 100 level students are registered officially to the school, faculty and their various departments respectively. During this time some older students with vast knowledge and Experience in the faculty come to organize tutorial classes for these fresh students. After the necessary orientations by various departments and welcoming of the new students, intense lecture sets in. Students are relatively introduced to the basic engineering related foundation courses with specks of mathematics, chemistry and physics. It’s easy to put down but really tough to go through. 100 level students are seen as amateurs and are left at the mercy of many entrepreneurs from outside the school, students who teach tutorial classes and older students who are generally down to exploit any loop hole of immaturity, innocence or inexperienced demeanor of fresh students; and also the constant harassment from cultists and bad students which has been a stigma to the school’s name.

          In 200 level, most student get wiser and many think they are but actually aren’t. Educationally 200 level when the foundation Engineering courses are introduced is the best and easiest time to make best grades but students are at this time easily deluded. Some students starts showing off, joining associations and social clubs trying to show the higher students who under looked them in their 100 level they have arrived. In fact 200 level is also a tough level to pass through.

          In 300 level when most things are settled and the real intense Engineering training starts. Every student is at this time is focused to a particular Engineering discipline. Much practical comes in; workshops, labs, studios etc. students find it hard to focus on their education at this time because they now know what goes on the school and how the school system runs. Some are deeply involved in school politics and politicking. There are lots of side attractions and fun spots like parties clubs, picnics, shows, forums etc. and since the engineering faculty is unimaginably large student are exposed to all kinds of characters and personalities, the rich, famous and popular. For some interiority complex infests their ego system. The ones with much insecure ego start manifesting irrational unwise behaviors and make erroneous decisions, and then there are ugly stories of cultism, robbery, rape, fraud, theft etc

          In 400 level there are no much psychological troubles because most of the students are now mature minded and experienced fully in decision making. Many students already know how to study hard and make good grades. But some kinds of difficulties are faced in their second semester which is the time for industrial training / attachment (I.T). Challenges like result and document computing necessary for the I.T. for some students they have problems of getting their schools student identification card which might be due to late application for the identification card.

          In 500 level which is the final year and stage of engineering training of making a certified Engineer. Most problems students face in writing making better grades in courses carried over. Most times release of results is a day before the lower level writes the paper. This gives students little or no time to student for the exam and to make if in such exams you need to study hard because any carry- over after graduation costs and extra year and an amount of carry-over attracts payment of school fees like a regular student. Before your graduation all dues owed the school are to be paid fully before being certified.

          Finally going through with every bit of the stages of the training and leaning an Engineering in the making should pass through and making a good grade on your certificate and you are off  for the national one year youth service, you can look and smile with proud confidence knowing that the wasn’t easy in any way going through the Engineering faculty of Enugu state University of science and technology because no product of any other school deliver Engineering services like an ESUT- made Engineer. Anytime an ESUT Engineer is defined, you will always find excellence.
